- 8, Paris: Pilot Anatoli Kvochur of the Soviet Union's military, has his MiG-29 jet plummet to the ground, but he manages to prevent the plane from injuring anyone, and saves himself by jumping out with a parachute with only 400 feet to hit the ground.

- 17, California: The Stealth plane flies for the first time.

- 5, Washington, D.C: Piedmont is merged into USAir.
- 18, Sydney: Qantas' Boeing 747, the Spirit of Australia, flies over non-stop from London, setting a world record for a four engine jet, after having flown 11,000 miles and 20 hours.
