This name was shared by two important 17th century political figures, father and son:
- George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628) was the favorite, and likely the lover, of James I of England, and continued to serve as a principal minister to James's son, Charles I. He was assassinated by a radical Puritan in 1628
- George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham (1627-1687), son of the first Duke, was also a politician, and a member of the Cabal during the reign of Charles II.
