The story revolves around the household of an old couple and their cohabiting sister-in-law, who never passes up an opportunity to drink or to make a good joke at someone's expense. Their uneasy peace is shattered by first the unexpected arrival of two good old friends with free floating anxiety who need a place to stay where they can escape "the terror", and then by the arrival of the family's daughter after the collapse of her fourth marriage.
