Allegany Reservation is an Indian reservation located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the Indian reservation had a total population of 1,099.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the Indian reservation has a total area of 113.1 km² (43.7 mi²). 94.2 km² (36.4 mi²) of it is land and 18.8 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 16.65% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 1,099 people, 410 households, and 280 families residing in the Indian reservation. The population density is 11.7/km² (30.2/mi²). There are 459 housing units at an average density of 4.9/km² (12.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the Indian reservation is 42.13% White, 0.82% African American, 53.78% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 2.64% from two or more races. 2.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 410 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.7% are married couples living together, 18.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.08. In the Indian reservation the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.9 males. The median income for a household in the Indian reservation is $28,971, and the median income for a family is $30,250. Males have a median income of $23,958 versus $20,982 for females. The per capita income for the Indian reservation is $12,681. 22.6% of the population and 17.0% of families are below the poverty line.
