\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,390 km² (1,695 mi²). 1,487 km² (574 mi²) of it is land and 2,903 km² (1,121 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 66.13% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,314 people, 12,818 households, and 8,690 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (54/mi²). There are 15,289 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.21% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,818 households out of which 29.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.30% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.20% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
