Alrek is derived from a norse name, Alrekr which means bulky.

During the Middle Ages the king of Norway had a farm at the foot of Ulrikken (a mountain in Bergen, Norway) called Álreksstaðir (Alrekstad). It is believed by Norsk Stadnamnleksikon (Norwegian Place Name Encyclopedia) that the name Álreksstaðir is derived from Ulrikken rather than the name Alrekr.

The name Årstad which is the name of a region of Bergen is probably an abbrevation of the word Alrekstad. For some strange reason, Alrekstad (included in but not limited to the place now called Årstadvollen) is not a part of the region of Bergen called Årstad.

The king's farm was moved further down to the sea by a later king (comment: before king Håkon Håkonsen) where the Håkon Hall is placed today.

Today Alrekstad is populated and including several houses you find Alrek Student Home placed where the king's farm once was.
