The AMC Gremlin was the first U.S supercompact car. Made by the American Motors Corporation for eight years from April 1, 1970 through the 1978 model year, a total of 671,475 Gremlins were made. The car came in a two door model ($1,879) and a four door hatchbank model ($1,959).

Legend has it the Gremlin design was first sketched out by designer Richard Teague on the back of a Northwest Orient air sickness bag. Eighteen months later, it was introduced.

The Gremlin was restyled and renamed the "Spirit of St. Louis" and continued in production through 1983.
