Americus is a city located in Sumter County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 17,013. The city is the county seat of Sumter County6.

census of 2000, there are 17,013 people, 6,374 households, and 4,149 families residing in the city. The population density is 626.8/km² (1,623.1/mi²). There are 7,053 housing units at an average density of 259.8/km² (672.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 39.05% White, 58.26% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,374 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.2% are married couples living together, 27.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 29.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.14. In the city the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 14.1% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older.
