In Egyptian mythology, Ammit ("Devourer" known as the"devourer of the dead") was a female demon, part lion, hippopotamus and crocodile.

Ammit lived under the scales of justice in Duat, the underworld. Thoth weighed the heart of a person against a feather , the symbol of Ma'at, the goddess of truth. If the heart was judged not pure, Ammut would devour it and the person undergoing judgement was not allowed to enter heaven, Aaru.
