Angkor is the ancient capital of the Khmer empire which thrived from the 9th century to 15th century CE. Today it lays in ruins near Siem Reap, Cambodia though Buddhist monks have been active in small numbers for centuries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and attracts large numbers of international tourists.
