Anton Walbrook, who came to England to escape the Nazis, turned down a chance to become a Hollywood star, preferring to be a British citizen. A fine, subtle actor, he only made a handful of films in England, but most, if not outright classics, remain extremely watchable. Possibly his most unusal film is the 1948 'Queen of Spades', and odd, gothic chiller in which he co-stars with an equally excellent Edith Evans.
