Archduke Albert of Austria (1559 - 1621) was appointed for the Spanish monarchy as Governor of the Low Countries in 1595, and from 1598 became joint sovereign of the Seventeen Provinces with his wife, the Infanta Isabella, daughter of Philip II of Spain.
