Arnold Toynbee (1852-1883) was an economic historian, the uncle of Arnold J. Toynbee with whom he is sometimes confused.

Toynbee was born in London, England, and taught economic history at Balliol College, Oxford. He was interested in social reform, and also worked with adult students. Toynbee was one of the first to use the phrase, "industrial revolution". Toynbee Hall, a university residence in London, was named after him.
