\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,200 km² (1,236 mi²). 3,191 km² (1,232 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,628 people, 12,816 households, and 10,022 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (31/mi²). There are 14,883 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.23% White, 0.60% Black or African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 21.53% from other races, and 3.47% from two or more races. 58.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,816 households out of which 41.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.30% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.80% are non-families. 18.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.99 and the average family size is 3.41.
