Bancomat is the term used to refer to automatic teller machines in continental Europe especially. Bancomat is used in Western Europe, and in some parts of Eastern Europe, even though, in Eastern Europe, the term ATM is used as well. The reason why Bancomat is used in Europe is because ATM is a language-specific term in English, and it cannot be used in countries that speak a language other than English. Bancomat, on the other hand, is more easily recognisable, as Bank, Banca, Banque, or alternative terms are apparent in most European languages.
