\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,984 km² (766 mi²). 1,949 km² (752 mi²) of it is land and 35 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.77% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 55,941 people, 21,062 households, and 12,616 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (74/mi²). There are 21,971 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.96% White, 1.19% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 1.79% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 21,062 households out of which 29.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.60% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.10% are non-families. 27.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the county the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 22.10% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 18.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
