Brad Mehldau is a new-generation jazz pianist. His classical training shows, and he often plays a separate melody with each hand. He's sometimes compared with Bill Evans but hates the comparison (explaining why in the liner notes of one of his albums). He plays original compositions, jazz standards and popular music of the younger generation. He's played in an unchanged trio (with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy) for many years, but has also played and recorded with Peter Bernstein, Mark Turner, Charlie Haden and others.
