\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 859 km² (332 mi²). 851 km² (329 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.84% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 87,965 people, 34,281 households, and 24,648 families residing in the county. The population density is 103/km² (268/mi²). There are 36,820 housing units at an average density of 43/km² (112/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.98% White, 3.99% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.89% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 2.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 34,281 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.94. In the county, the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 11.30% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,034, and the median income for a family is $41,779. Males have a median income of $30,654 versus $21,407 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,108. 12.20% of the population and 9.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.40% are under the age of 18 and 11.60% are 65 or older.
