Bridge City is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,323. It was established in the 1930s during the construction of the Huey P. Long Bridge over the Mississippi River.

Geography

\nBridge City is located at 29°55'26" North, 90°9'58" West (29.923956, -90.166030)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.6 km² (5.3 mi²). 11.3 km² (4.4 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 16.73% water.

census of 2000, there are 8,323 people, 2,834 households, and 2,122 families residing in the town. The population density is 735.4/km² (1,903.8/mi²). There are 3,067 housing units at an average density of 271.0/km² (701.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 45.08% White, 47.55% African American, 0.76% Native American, 3.94% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.27% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 4.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,834 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% are married couples living together, 28.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% are non-families. 20.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.87 and the average family size is 3.32. In the town the population is spread out with 34.0% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.3 males. The median income for a household in the town is $23,002, and the median income for a family is $25,620. Males have a median income of $28,329 versus $18,350 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,333. 32.0% of the population and 28.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 43.8% are under the age of 18 and 16.8% are 65 or older.
