\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,484 km² (1,731 mi²). 4,437 km² (1,713 mi²) of it is land and 47 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.05% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 35,460 people, 14,638 households, and 9,324 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (21/mi²). There are 15,861 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.47% White, 0.28% Black or African American, 2.72% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,638 households out of which 29.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.80% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.30% are non-families. 30.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.91.
