Cheshire is a village located in Gallia County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 221.

This village was bought by American Electric Power Company for $20 million to avoid having to clean up environmental contamination. This represents the first time a private company has ever purchased an entire town in the USA.

Geography

Cheshire is located at 38°56'44" North, 82°6'43" West (38.945520, -82.111891)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and 5.26% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 221 people, 93 households, and 59 families residing in the village. The population density is 474.0/km² (1,201.2/mi²). There are 110 housing units at an average density of 236.0/km² (597.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.19% White, 1.36% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 93 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 6.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 33.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the village the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.2 males.
