Clear and Present Danger is a novel in the series written by Tom Clancy and later made into a movie.

It surrounds his famous literary character Jack Ryan when he is thrown into the position of Deputy Director of the CIA after the untimely diagnosis of CIA director Admiral James Greer with pancreatic cancer. Ryan becomes unwittingly pulled into an illegal paramilitary anti-narcotic operation in South America which was authorized by the President. Eventually, Ryan is forced to join John Clark in a rescue operation in South America for the abandoned US Special Forces Soldiers.
