Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,995 km² (1,157 mi²). 2,581 km² (997 mi²) of it is land and 414 km² (160 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.83% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 55,099 people, 22,250 households, and 15,174 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (55/mi²). There are 33,483 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.64% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,250 households out of which 30.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.70% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64, and 17.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,589, and the median income for a family is $44,847. Males have a median income of $33,838 versus $22,896 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,174. 9.80% of the population and 6.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.40% are under the age of 18 and 9.90% are 65 or older.
