Culpeper County is a county located in the State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 34,262. Its county seat is Culpeper6.

This county is a part of the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 990 km² (382 mi²). 987 km² (381 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.33% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 34,262 people, 12,141 households, and 9,045 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (90/mi²). There are 12,871 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.27% White, 18.15% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 2.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,141 households out of which 35.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.50% are non-families. 20.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 31.10% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 103.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.20 males.
