The defense of others (alter ego defense or defense of a third person) is a possible justification for breaking the law. Defendants who use this defense are arguing that they should not be held liable for a crime, since the actionss taken were intended to protect another individual from danger. This defense is treated in a manner similar to self-defense, in that the use of violent force, used by the defendant, must be in some manner appropriate to the situation. Most courts have ruled that this defense cannot be used to protected friends or family members who have engaged in an illegal fight. Likewise, one cannot use this to aid a criminal.
