\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,025 km² (396 mi²). 1,019 km² (393 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.66% water.

There are 51,032 housing units at an average density of 50/km² (130/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.73% White, 6.72% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 47,131 households out of which 27.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.50% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.00% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.90. In the county the population is spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 16.90% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.20 males.
