Demorest is a city located in Habersham County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,465.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.87% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,465 people, 498 households, and 292 families residing in the city. The population density is 249.2/km² (644.4/mi²). There are 564 housing units at an average density of 95.9/km² (248.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.70% White, 3.96% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.61% Asian American, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.77% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 3.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 498 households out of which 23.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% are non-families. 36.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.77.

In the city the population is spread out with 15.1% under the age of 18, 28.6% from 18 to 24, 21.4% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 84.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males.
