The municipality has a population of 3461 and covers an area of 274,95 km² of which 8,17 km² is water. The population density is 12,830 inhabitants per km². The municipality is bilingual with a majority of 76 percent of the population being Swedish speakers and 21 percent being Finnish speakers.
