Düsseldorf International Airport is an airport located eight kilometres away from Düsseldorf, Germany. The airport has the IATA Airport Code DUS.
The airport flies to 180 destinations on four continents and it has 70 airlines. The airport has 500 takeoffs and landings per day.
Düsseldorf International Airport once had a lot of flights from the United States. After September 11, Continental Airlines and United Airlines left the airport. Now, its only flight to the United States is a Privatair flight from Newark Liberty International Airport, which is under Lufthansa code.
The airport was opened on April 19, 1927, after two years of construction. However already in 1909 the first aircraft already landed in the north of Düsseldorf, the Zeppelin LZ-III.
On April 11, 1996, a fire probably caused by welding works on the roof did kill 17 people in the airport, mostly due to the deadly smoke. The terminal building was heavily damaged, and was closed for five years. On July 1, 2001 it was re-openend nearly completely re-built.
A monorail connects the terminal building with the Intercity train station. The so-called SkyTrain covers a distance of 2.5 kilometers with a maximum speed of 50 km/h. It started operation in 2002.
