A Fall line is typically the head of coastal navigation of rivers, marked by the geologic boundary between coastal alluvia and continental bedrock. In the settlement of the United States of America, many principal cities formed at the fall line, as centers of commerce and manufacture. Richmond, Virginia, Paterson, New Jersey, Hartford, Connecticut, and Lowell, Massachusetts are examples of fall-line cities.
