They formed when college friends Matt Boonstra, Kevin Albrecht, and Eric Gardner decided they needed something creative to do in their spare time. After auditioning drummers and singers, Jarred Blackmer and Angela Infante joined the band on drums and vocals, respectively. The band began gigging in the local independent music scene during the summer of 2002. Initially described as a "folk-rock band with a campy edge and hip-hop elements," False Impression strived to avoid being pigeonholed in a specific genre. After the departure of lead guitarist Matt in January of 2003, the band temporarily filled the position with Sean Hayes. After the departure of Sean, rhythm guitarist Kevin took over all guitar duties, with the band eventually deciding not to search for a second guitarist.
