\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,486 km² (960 mi²). 2,461 km² (950 mi²) of it is land and 25 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,804 people, 8,722 households, and 6,044 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (23/mi²). There are 11,113 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.58% White, 7.01% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 6.66% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 12.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,722 households out of which 28.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.70% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.97.
