Flying Nun Records is probably the most influential independent record label in New Zealand. Many of the most prominent kiwi rock bands come from Flying Nun, including The Clean and The Chills. The label was formed in 1981 by Roger Shepherd among a flurry of other punk rock-inspired labels based in Auckland.

The Pin Groups' "Ambivalence" was the first recording released by Flying Nun. subsequent releases included The Clean's Boodle Boodle Boodle and Great Sounds Great, as well as a compilation called Dunedin Double. These recordings gave rise to the Dunedin Sound.
