\nFranklin County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Benjamin Franklin, famous statesman, scientist, and printer. As of 2000 the population was 31,223. Its county seat is Russellville.

History

\nFranklin County was established on February 6, 1818.

Geography

\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,674 km² (647 mi²). 1,646 km² (636 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.68% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 31,223 people, 12,259 households, and 8,949 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 13,749 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.68% White, 4.21% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 4.62% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 7.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,259 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.00% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.97. In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $27,177, and the median income for a family is $34,274. Males have a median income of $27,497 versus $18,631 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,814. 18.90% of the population and 15.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.60% are under the age of 18 and 24.10% are 65 or older.
