Gary Earl Johnson (born January 1 1953) is a former Republican Governor of New Mexico and an outspoken opponent of the War on Drugs. He won a tough Republican primary in 1994 and defeated the democratic governor, Bruce King, in the general election of that year. He was reelected in 1998, defeating democrat Martin Chavez 54%-46%, and served as governor from 1995 until 2003, not running again in 2002. He considered a run for President in 2004 as a Libertarian. He became widely thought of as a sympathizer of the militia movement and was criticized for meeting with their representatives in 1995, soon after the Oklahoma City bombing.
