\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,229 km² (2,791 mi²). 6,944 km² (2,681 mi²) of it is land and 285 km² (110 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.95% water.

There are 29,081 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.54% White, 0.99% Black or African American, 1.16% Native American, 0.87% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 17.36% from other races, and 3.01% from two or more races. 30.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 25,204 households out of which 39.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.30% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 21.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.92 and the average family size is 3.38. In the county, the population is spread out with 32.00% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 19.70% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 104.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,276, and the median income for a family is $38,938. Males have a median income of $32,414 versus $24,310 for females.
