Greenfield is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the city of Greenfield in Franklin County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 13,716.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²). 14.9 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.55% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 13,716 people, 6,117 households, and 3,119 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 922.6/km² (2,391.0/mi²). There are 6,435 housing units at an average density of 432.9 persons/km² (1,121.8 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.13% White, 1.41% African American, 0.36% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.27% from other races, and 2.60% from two or more races. 3.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,117 households out of which 25.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.4% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 49.0% are non-families. 40.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $30,939, and the median income for a family is $43,888. Males have a median income of $32,069 versus $26,045 for females.
