Hempstead is a town located in Nassau County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 755,924.

Geography

United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 495.5 km² (191.3 mi²). 310.7 km² (120.0 mi²) of it is land and 184.8 km² (71.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 37.30% water.

census of 2000, there are 755,924 people, 246,828 households, and 193,513 families residing in the town. The population density is 2,433.0/km² (6,301.3/mi²). There are 252,286 housing units at an average density of 812.0 persons/km² (2,103.0 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 74.65% White, 14.78% African American, 0.19% Native American, 3.53% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 4.50% from other races, and 2.33% from two or more races. 11.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 246,828 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.2% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 21.6% are non-families. 18.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.41. In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.2 males.
