British history, until comparatively recent times, was one of struggle and competition between the separate nation states that occupied various parts of the island of Britain. England became the dominant power, consuming these nations at different times under the mantle of 'Britain' to form the United Kingdom.

For a history of the modern state of Britain see History of the United Kingdom. Also see History of England, History of Scotland, History of Wales and insofar as the history of the island and nation of Ireland is bound up with the history of Britain see History of Ireland. Also see British Empire.
