It is about a young woman called Sophie Hatter who is turned into an old crone by a powerful witch whom she inadvertantly offends, and finds work as a housekeeper for the notorious Wizard Howl (who is said to collect the hearts of beautiful young women). There is a sequel titled Castle in the Air. As of 2003, an anime film based on the novel is in production, directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli.
