It is the successor to the communist Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party. It is the the largest single party in the Hungarian National Assembly at the moment, with 178 out of 386 seats; on a 42.1% share of the vote. It governs in coalition with the Alliance of Free Democrats, giving it a slim majority. The party is a member of the Party of European Socialists.
