\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,284 km² (882 mi²). 2,179 km² (841 mi²) of it is land and 106 km² (41 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.63% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 76,596 people, 28,742 households, and 20,521 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (91/mi²). There are 32,490 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (39/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.57% White, 9.45% Black or African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 3.93% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 8.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 28,742 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
