\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,109 km² (814 mi²). 2,105 km² (813 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

There are 3,517 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.82% White, 0.09% Black or African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,190 households out of which 28.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.50% are married couples living together, 4.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.30% are non-families. 29.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.03. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 5.60% from 18 to 24, 22.10% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 26.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 94.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.70 males.
