The Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana) was a fascist state in German-occupied northern Italy, with Benito Mussolini as its puppet ruler.

It was founded on September 23, 1943 after the capitulation of Italy and lasted until 1945. Soon after its establishment it was forced to cede Trieste, Istria and South Tyrol to Germany, with the understanding that Venice would be taken at some point.
