He was the uncle of Samuel Phillips (1752-1802), who was a founder of Phillips Andover. John Phillips (August 30, 1935 - March 18, 2001) was an American singer. John Phillips was born in Parris Island, South Carolina. He was a member of the singing group, "The Mamas & the Papas." He is also the father of actress Mackenzie Phillips.
