Oscar Kjellberg (pronounced 'Shellberg') of Sweden and the ESAB (Elektriska Svetsnings-AtkieBolaget) Company invented (Patent 231733) the covered or coated electrode by dipping bare iron wire in thick mixtures of carbonates and silicates. The purpose of the coating was to protect the molten metal from oxygen and nitrogen. His pioneering of covered electrode development paved the road during the next twenty years in the research of reliable flux coated electrodes.
