It is located in the province of Southern Finland and is part of the Kymenlaakso region. The municipality has a population of 54768 and covers an area of 274,12 kmē of which 5,78 kmē is water. The population density is 203,55 inhabitants per kmē.

The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
