The racial makeup of the city is 55.84% White, 34.69% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.21% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. 15.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,237 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 17.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 24.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
