The Land Ordinance of 1787 was the most significant accomplishment of the Congress formed by the Articles of Confederation. It had the following points:

  • set up a government in the region north of the Ohio River
  • When any portion of the territory reached a population of 60,000 or more, it could apply for admission to the Union as a state
  • prohibited enslavement of anyone born in the Territory
  • upheld property/contract rights and freedom of religion
