Geography\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,120 km² (819 mi²). 2,104 km² (812 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.
Demographics\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 44,874 people, 17,083 households, and 12,180 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (55/mi²). There are 19,687 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.44% White, 34.53% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 1.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 17,083 households out of which 33.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.30% are married couples living together, 17.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.06.
